I would like to introduce you to a new member of the Speyside team. Laura Bowie has joined the clinic as receptionist and sterilisation nurse. Laura has had experience in the distillery industry and caring professions. Her calm and caring manner will help everyone to relax and enjoy their visit to the Speyside Dental Clinic.

Jo has left the clinic and is pursuing her career in the hospitality industry. Everyone wishes her well and success for the future.

After a break for Christmas 2013 has started with a bang crash wallop. The serenity and peace of the Speyside Dental Clinic has been temporarily disturbed by the refurbishment of the old parish hall meeting room. (The room to the left of the hall). My apologies for some of the noises, but Mark’s drill is bigger than mine. Thank you to everyone for tolerating the brief interuption. 2013 is a promising year and we are working on some exciting develpoments here at the Clinic which we hope to bring you news of soon.

WE WON! In November The Speyside Dental Clinic was voted Practice of the Year for the whole of the North of Scotland. I would like to say A HUGE THANK YOU to all our fabulous patients for their support in winning this prestigous award. We love our work here and will always endeavour to better the care and service we provide for all our patients. I hope you can join us at the upcoming Open Evening on Thursday and in the Fleming Hall in Aberlour for the Aberlour Village Fayre on Sunday.

As many of you know the Speyside Dental Clinic was entered into the national Dentistry Scotland Awards this year. Great news…. we are in the finals! A huge thank you to all who wrote such supportive testimonials and told us we are on the right track. We will always strive to offer the best care, comfort and safety for you, but it would be magic to bring home a gong to Aberlour. The team is travelling to Gleneagles for the award ceremony next Friday and will be keeping everything crossed.

It is Colgate Oral Health month in September. At the Speyside Dental Clinic we are passionate about your oral health, so together with Colgate, and the British Dental Association we are encouraging everyone to think about their mouth in September. There is growing evidence to suggest that better oral health has an impact on better general health and reduces risks associated with heart and chest disease.

We are holding a free clinic for anyone who is concerned about their mouth, teeth or gums on Thursday 13 September from 2.00 to 5.00 pm. Simon and Vanessa will be available to examiane your mouth and advise you on the best way to look after it.

All are welcome and everyone will receive on oral health care kit including tooth brush and toohpaste

Have just returned from a fabulous week in Bern, Switzerland, undergoing further implant training. The days were busy with lectures, group discussions and practical sessions scheduled from 8.15 am until 7.00 pm! No-one was complaining as it was a rare opportunity to get three world leading Professors, among others, giving you the benefit of their knowledge and experience. The training with the International Team in Implantology is heavily based on evidence-based therapies so there was more reading after each days sessions. An exhilarating week but it is good to be back at work for a rest. I would love to tell you about beautiful city of Bern, the first city world heritage site, but I did not see it, maybe next time.

This is why we already offer late evening appointments on Monday and Tuesday evenings. As these appointments are so popular, we are now offering Saturday morning appointments to help our patients manage their busy schedules. So come in for a warm welcome in beautiful surroundings and enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee and the papers while we take care of you!

The Office of Fair Trading’s report into dentistry published recently expressed concern that there are no inspections of private practices in Scotland to ensure that patients have written information and costs. To reassure any new patients, we always provide our patients with a written treatment plan and estimate of fees in advance of treatment. If it’s an emergency appointment, we explain everything verbally with great care. Speyside Dental Clinic supports the OFT’s call for private dental care in Scotland to be regulated because we believe all private patients have a right to know in advance what their treatment involves and what it will cost. We are also fully behind the OFT on the issue of guarantees. The OFT report wasn’t happy that some dental practices do not provide a guarantee for their treatment. As our patients know, the treatment we provide has a guarantee for a year. If you have any queries on either aspect, don’t hesitate to ask.

Spreading the word in Smile Month

If you are one of our patients, you are no doubt caring for your mouth as you should. But you would be surprised how many people don’t and how potentially risky their self-neglect is. Here are a few statistics:

Around a quarter of all adults say they have not visited a dentist in the past two years
Three in every ten adults suffer from regular dental pain
A quarter of adults don’t brush their teeth twice a day

Smile Month takes place in May and June. It’s a valuable opportunity to publicise some important oral health messages. Poor oral health doesn’t just cause problems inside the mouth. A smile is hugely important to our personalities, self-confidence, relationships and success. Studies continue to associate poor oral health to serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, strokes, pneumonia, premature babies and other major conditions. With a good oral health routine, most of these conditions are preventable.
